The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) was represented by its Adviser on Culture and Education, Emilio Dogliani. In his input, he stressed the need to ensure that EU Member States join efforts to tackle the demographic crisis end ensure that there will be a future generation of Europeans.

Besides pointing to the essential role of family and education for the identity formation of young people, Dogliani emphasised the need for to tap into existing intergenerational projects, strengthening EU youth learning programmes and addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by digitalisation.

During this occasion, adviser Dogliani also presented recent COMECE youth initiatives: “The COMECE Youth Net proposed having media campaigns that promote a culture of encounter and discuss issues such as loneliness, alienation, human dignity in the relationship of young people with digital and social media tools. We need closer attention to this challenge and fostering intergenerational dialogue might be the way to communicate to young people a healthy relationship with digital tools, the value of personal encounters and involvement in society and communities”.

The event marked the first Article 17 TFEU dialogue meeting hosted by Vice-President and new responsible for its implementation, Antonella Sberna. COMECE President, Mgr. Mariano Crociata, and General Secretary, Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, congratulated Vice-President Sberna on her recent appointment during a meeting in early December.

This format of dialogue, which featured participation from representatives of various Churches and religious communities, is part of a long-standing tradition under Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), which provides for an open, transparent, and regular dialogue between the EU and Churches, religious associations or communities.
