The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) has reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Ukraine in a letter addressed to the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organisations, on Monday, 2 December 2024. Download the Letter

Signed by the President of COMECE, H. E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata, the letter conveys EU bishops’ steadfast support and compassion for Ukraine amidst the ongoing suffering caused by Russia’s full-scale military aggression.

The message acknowledges the immense hardship endured by the Ukrainian people for over 1,000 days of conflict. COMECE highlights the widespread destruction, displacement of millions, and loss of countless lives that have left deep scars in Ukraine.

Mgr. Crociata emphasises that this pain is shared by communities of all faiths and across all nations. In the message, COMECE assures the Ukrainian people that the bishops of the European Union remain united in prayer, particularly during the harsh winter months and amidst geopolitical uncertainty.

The EU bishops express hope that no one will feel abandoned and pray for warmth and shelter for all those suffering as a result of the war.

Furthermore, COMECE calls upon political leaders in Europe and beyond to act with wisdom, integrity, and discernment in view of a just and lasting peace.

As Christmas draws near, the letter offers a message of hope inspired by the birth of Jesus Christ. COMECE underscores the enduring relevance of the teachings of the ‘Prince of Peace,’ which transcend all barriers and encourage solidarity and human fraternity, especially in times of hardship.

This letter follows a series of solidarity and advocacy initiatives taken by COMECE in support of the people of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale aggression in 2022.
